The homeowner problem
The area right against the house is where embers, radiant heat and flames are most likely to reach the structure. Reducing combustible materials there is one of the highest value moves a homeowner can make.
What Zone 0 means
Zone 0 is the term used for the area extending about five feet from the exterior walls of a home. It includes the ground surface, attached structures such as decks and fences and anything stored against the house.
Improvements to consider
- Removing combustible mulch
- Moving firewood and storage away from exterior walls
- Replacing combustible ground cover with gravel, stone or pavers
- Removing dead vegetation and debris
- Replacing combustible gates and fence sections near the home
- Clearing beneath decks and exterior stairs
- Choosing plants that will not touch the wall as they grow
