Why the first five feet matter
Embers travel with the wind and settle against walls, under decks and along fences. If the surface right against the home is combustible, a small ignition can quickly reach the structure.
What to consider
Combustible mulch, wood piles, door mats, patio furniture, attached fencing and dead vegetation are common items to move or replace. Gravel, stone, pavers and concrete are typical noncombustible alternatives near the home.
Local requirements
Local rules and enforcement can change over time. Homeowners should verify current requirements with the appropriate local fire or building authority before assuming a particular rule already applies to their property.
